When a Minor Auto Collision Leads to Major Consequences

We know not all car accidents look devastating at first, but even a seemingly minor crash can lead to life-changing and catastrophic bodily injury. Our attorneys, Robert Brahan and Jerome Moroux, represented a client involved in a March 2023 car accident, a case that serves as a reminder to take all auto collisions seriously.

Our client was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Ambassador Caffery Parkway and Westmark Boulevard in Lafayette, Louisiana. While waiting for the light to change, another driver took a left turn into oncoming traffic, crashing into another vehicle that spun out of control into our client’s car.

The property damage to our client’s vehicle appeared relatively minor, however our client sustained life-changing injuries to her neck and sacroiliac joint (SI). These types of injuries can have a significant effect on mobility and quality of life.

After the car accident, our client started treatment with a chiropractor to help manage the pain. However, the pain and discomfort continued, so our client was referred to Jayme Trahan, MD. Dr. Trahan administered cervical epidural steroid injections at the C7-T1 level, medial branch blocks, and radiofrequency ablations to treat both the cervical spine and SI joint.

Unfortunately, our client had little to no relief, and her injuries continued to cause her severe pain and discomfort. Her past medical expenses reached $75,000, in addition to future treatment recommendations of a one-level anterior cervical discectomy, fusion surgery (ACDF) and an SI joint fusion.

The defense argued that due to the low impact of the accident, the collision would not have caused such severe injuries. Additionally, the defense hired an accident reconstructionist and a biomechanical engineer to support their argument. They also brought in David Ferachi, MD for an additional medical exam. Dr. Ferachi claimed that our client didn’t sustain her injuries due to the car accident.

However, despite the defense’s efforts, Robert and Jerome fought for our client’s rights and advocated for her severity of pain. As a result of their hard work and dedication, they were able to settle the case before trial for $1,330,000.
